Lions and Tigers and Bears...Oh My!
4-16-05

Many times throughout our life someone tells us to follow our heart.  It’s such a wonderful little saying, one that brings a smile to the face of the hopeful.  “Follow your heart, and you can never go wrong.”

Says who?  Let’s get serious here.  Who out there has had their heart take them exactly where they need to go?  Isn’t it more realistic to say that our hearts are only attracted to the things that will break it…as if it’s a child reaching for that pretty red stove burner…and following our hearts will only end up in us getting burned?

I’ve been there, done that.  My hands are bright red as I write this because that stovetop was too damn pretty to ignore.  So at what point do we say screw our hearts, brains are the way to go?

There are times our hearts will lead us somewhere that we feel is the best place to be.  Speaking from immediate learning experience, however, I believe that we have to let our brains play a part in what we do.  While our hearts lead us in one direction that feels so damn right, our brains may be warning us about what our hearts are blinded from seeing.  It's always important that we let our brains and our hearts confer (and often), just to ensure they are both in the know.

And then what happens when both our brains and our hearts say the wrong thing?  Well, we take a tip from the Wizard of Oz, because after a spin in that twister, we’ll need a whole lot of courage and home.
