biography

About me:  I’m thirty-one years old, and spent most of my life in my hometown of Wichita, Kansas.  I temporarily live in Kansas City, but have lived in various parts of the country, including Texas, Northern California, and Indiana.  I’m the oldest of four children and have two children myself.  Both boys; God knew I would have no clue what to do with girls.  I also have a wonderful nephew and a pseudo-niece.  I recently added two more nieces to the mix.  I never quite grew out of that tomboy phase, which I'm sure explains a lot.  My marital status, you ask?  Well, I will marry Raine Maida some day.  He just doesn’t realize it yet (insert evil laugh here).  But in reality I am divorced and I mostly like it that way.  Unless Raine comes along.  Either him or Rob Thomas, that is.

Writing roots:  I started writing when I was fourteen years old.  That’s when I realized I was a writer, not a schizophrenic, and wrote down the crazy stories that were running through my head.  I spent twelve years writing nothing but poetry and short stories and even a couple songs; all but two poems are forever lost.  After discovering the world of writing, I planned on teaching high school English and doing freelance journalism, but then I discovered that Life sometimes has other plans.  I’ve taken classes in both English and criminal justice, but stopped college when I found out I had to take college algebra.  As a child I desperately wanted to be in the FBI or join the police force or, best of all, become a private investigator.  Now I rely heavily on my love of criminal justice in my writing.

Writing activities:  I primarily write novels, but I also write miserably depressive, jump-off-the-nearest-cliff type poems.  Occasionally I venture into erotic poetry, which requires a few strong drinks and a visit from the boogeyman to really enjoy.  In addition, I have a "Ramblings" column featured on this website and I dabble in freelance writing, specializing in musician biography and band review.

Reading activities: I received my first Stephen King book when I was in eighth grade, a gift from my Aunt Carol.  It was titled Christine, and it forever changed my world.  I became a King fanatic and started picking up other authors – Dean Koontz and John Saul, to name a couple.  As I grew older, I discovered a world of authors:  Patricia Cornwell, Sue Grafton, Michael Palmer, Ridley Pearson, Christine McGuire, George R. R. Martin, Piers Anthony, Iris Johansen, and Sidney Sheldon are my personal choices to curl up with.  Two of my favorite books are Sleepers by Lorenzo Carcaterra and Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow.  And of course, my all time favorite, trite as it may be, is The Catcher In The Rye.  I have the same, now yellowed copy that I purchased when I was only fourteen - and the story still amazes me today.  Go, Holden.

Inspiration and support:  My inspiration for writing comes from a variety of places, but music plays an enormous role in my daily inspiration.  I never begin writing without an intriguing melody playing.  I am very blessed to have an incredible support system.  My mother, my friends, and even my children continue to encourage me daily.  Even though they may not always know it, I appreciate their presence in my life and I would not have made it past the first chapter if it weren’t for them.
